William Wegman is an American artist and photographer best known for his photographs of Weimaraner dogs. Born in 1943 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Wegman studied painting at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
In 1970, Wegman moved to Los Angeles where he began experimenting with video art. He soon became a regular on the television show The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, where he showcased his video art pieces. It was during this time that he adopted his first Weimaraner dog, Man Ray, who would become the star of many of his photographs.
Wegman's photographs often feature Man Ray and other Weimaraners dressed in costumes or posed in humorous situations. His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions around the world and is held in the collections of major museums such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York City and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has also published several books featuring his photographs, including William Wegman: Funney/Strange (2006) and William Wegman: Being Human (2009).
In addition to photography, Wegman has also worked as a painter, sculptor, filmmaker, author, and teacher. He currently lives and works in New York City with his wife Christine Burgin and their two dogs Flo and Topper.
