Viviane Sassen is a Dutch photographer and artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Born in 1972 in Amsterdam, she studied fashion design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie before turning to photography.
Sassen's work is characterized by its bold use of color, light, and shadow. She often uses her own body as a subject, creating surreal images that explore themes of identity and femininity. Her photographs have been featured in publications such as Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, and W Magazine.
In addition to her photography, Sassen has also created video installations and directed music videos for artists such as Björk and Massive Attack. She has published several books of her work including Flamboya (2008), Pikin Slee (2010), Umbra (2012), In & Out of Fashion (2014), and Parasomnia (2017).
Sassen's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and many other institutions around the world. She has received numerous awards including the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in New York City (2013) and the Royal Photographic Society's Hood Medal for outstanding achievement (2015).
