Thiemo Sy is a German photographer and visual artist based in Berlin. He is known for his unique style of photography, which combines elements of documentary, fashion, and fine art.
Sy was born in Berlin in 1984 and grew up in the city's Kreuzberg district. He studied photography at the University of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld, Germany, where he graduated with a degree in photography and media design. After graduating, he worked as a freelance photographer for several years before establishing his own studio in Berlin.
Sy's work has been featured in numerous publications including Vogue Italia, GQ Germany, and The New York Times Magazine. His photographs have also been exhibited at galleries around the world including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City and the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London.
In addition to his commercial work, Sy has also created several personal projects that explore themes such as identity, memory, and belonging. His most recent project is titled "The Other Side," which focuses on the lives of people living on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. The project was recently published as a book by Hatje Cantz Verlag.
Sy's work has earned him numerous awards including the International Photography Award (IPA) for Best Documentary Series (2015), the Sony World Photography Award for Professional Portraiture (2016), and the Prix Pictet Commission (2017). He has also been named one of PDN's 30 Emerging Photographers to Watch (2018).
