Terry Richardson is an American fashion and portrait photographer who has shot campaigns for some of the world's most recognizable brands, including Marc Jacobs, Aldo, Supreme, Sisley, Tom Ford, and Yves Saint Laurent. He has also photographed celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, and Barack Obama.
Richardson was born in New York City in 1965 to Bob Richardson and Annie Lomax. His father was a fashion photographer who worked with the likes of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. Richardson grew up surrounded by photography and art; his mother was a model and his father's studio was located in their home.
Richardson began taking pictures at an early age and developed a style that was heavily influenced by his father's work. He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he studied photography and film. After graduating in 1987 he began working as an assistant to fashion photographers like Herb Ritts and Mario Testino.
In 1992 Richardson moved to Paris where he began shooting for magazines like Vogue Paris, GQ France, i-D Magazine, The Face Magazine, Arena Magazine, Purple Magazine and Vice Magazine. His work quickly gained recognition for its boldness and irreverence; he often used bright colors and exaggerated poses to create striking images that were both humorous and provocative.
In the 2000s Richardson's career took off; he shot campaigns for major brands such as Levi's, H&M, Supreme, Sisley Paris, Tom Ford Eyewear and Yves Saint Laurent Beauty. He also photographed celebrities such as Lady Gaga (for her album cover Born This Way), Beyoncé (for her album cover I Am...Sasha Fierce), Miley Cyrus (for her album cover Bangerz) and Barack Obama (for Time magazine). In addition to his commercial work Richardson has published several books of his photographs including Terryworld (2004), Kibosh (2007)and Son of Bob (2010).
Richardson continues to be one of the most sought-after photographers in the world today; his work is characterized by its boldness and irreverence which have made him one of the most influential photographers of our time.
