About

Sam Falls is an American photographer and multimedia artist based in Los Angeles. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Falls was born in 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. He received his BFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2006 and his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2009. After graduating from Yale, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a professional photographer.

Falls' work is heavily influenced by his interest in nature and its relationship to human experience. His photographs often feature natural elements such as trees, rocks, water, and sky that are illuminated by light or shadow. He also uses digital manipulation to create abstracted images that explore themes such as time and memory.

In addition to his photography practice, Falls has also created several multimedia installations that combine video projection with soundscapes composed of field recordings from various locations around the world. These installations have been exhibited at venues such as The Broad Museum in Los Angeles and The Photographers' Gallery in London.

Falls has received numerous awards for his work including a Guggenheim Fellowship (2015), an International Center for Photography Infinity Award (2016), and a Lucie Award (2017). His work has been featured in publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Vogue Italia, W Magazine, and Harper's Bazaar UK.
