Roe Ethridge is an American photographer and artist based in New York City. He is known for his innovative approach to photography, which often combines elements of commercial and fine art.
Born in 1969 in Marietta, Georgia, Ethridge grew up in a family of photographers. His father was a commercial photographer and his mother was a photojournalist. From an early age, Ethridge was exposed to the world of photography and developed an interest in the medium.
In 1991, he moved to New York City to pursue a career as a photographer. He began working as an assistant for fashion photographers such as Steven Meisel and Mario Testino before launching his own career as a freelance photographer. His work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, GQ, W Magazine, and Harper’s Bazaar.
Ethridge has also exhibited his work at galleries around the world including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; the Centre Pompidou in Paris; and the Tate Modern in London. In addition to his photography work, he has also created video installations for exhibitions at MoMA PS1 and The Kitchen in New York City.
In 2009, Ethridge was awarded the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Applied/Fashion/Advertising Photography. He has also been recognized with awards from American Photography magazine and PDN magazine’s 30 Under 30 list.
Ethridge continues to push boundaries with his photography by combining elements of commercial and fine art into unique images that challenge traditional notions of beauty and identity.
