Rocio Badiola is a Spanish photographer and visual artist based in Madrid. She is known for her unique and captivating images that explore the relationship between people and their environment.
Badiola was born in Madrid in 1982, where she grew up surrounded by art and culture. She studied photography at the University of Madrid, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts in 2006. After graduation, she began to pursue her passion for photography full-time, traveling around Europe to capture the beauty of its landscapes and people.
In 2008, Badiola had her first solo exhibition at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, showcasing her work from her travels around Europe. Since then, she has exhibited her work in numerous galleries and museums across Spain and internationally. Her work has been featured in publications such as Vogue Italia, El País Semanal, Marie Claire España, and The New York Times Magazine.
Badiola’s photographs are characterized by their dreamy quality and subtle use of color. She often uses natural light to create a sense of intimacy between the subject and the viewer. Her work often focuses on themes such as identity, memory, nature, and nostalgia.
In addition to her photography career, Badiola also works as a professor at the University of Madrid’s School of Visual Arts. She is also an active member of several international photography organizations such as Foto Colectania Foundation and PhotoEspaña Festival Internacional de Fotografía y Artes Visuales.
Badiola’s work has been recognized with numerous awards including the International Photography Award (IPA) for Best Fine Art Series (2015), PhotoEspaña Descubrimientos Prize (2016), Prix Pictet Commission (2017), and Prix Pictet Shortlist (2018).
