Nhu Xuan Hua is a Vietnamese-American photographer and visual artist based in New York City. She was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States at the age of nine. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she studied photography and video.
Hua’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the International Center of Photography in New York City, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her photographs have also been featured in publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and Vogue Italia.
Hua’s work often explores themes of identity, displacement, and belonging. She often uses her own experiences as an immigrant to inform her work. Her photographs are characterized by their vivid colors and dreamlike quality. She often uses digital manipulation to create surreal images that explore themes of memory and nostalgia.
Hua has received numerous awards for her work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018 and a Lucie Award for Fine Art Photographer of the Year in 2019. In 2020 she was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
Hua is currently working on a new series exploring themes of home and belonging through portraiture.
