Murilo Yamanaka is a Brazilian photographer and visual artist based in São Paulo. He is known for his unique approach to photography, which combines elements of documentary and fine art.
Yamanaka was born in São Paulo in 1982. He studied photography at the University of São Paulo, where he graduated with a degree in Visual Arts in 2006. After graduating, he began working as a freelance photographer, shooting for magazines and newspapers such as Folha de São Paulo and Estado de São Paulo.
In 2008, Yamanaka had his first solo exhibition at the Galeria Vermelho in São Paulo. Since then, his work has been exhibited internationally at galleries and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate Modern in London. His photographs have also been featured in publications such as The New Yorker and The Guardian.
Yamanaka's work often focuses on themes of identity, memory, and place. He has traveled extensively throughout Brazil to document its diverse cultures and landscapes. His photographs are characterized by their vivid colors and intimate compositions that capture the beauty of everyday life.
Yamanaka's work has earned him numerous awards including the Prix Pictet Award for Photography (2015), the Hasselblad Masters Award (2016), and the International Center of Photography Infinity Award (2017). He continues to exhibit his work around the world while also teaching workshops on photography at universities across Brazil.
