Mike Figgis is an English film director, screenwriter, and composer. He is best known for his work on the films Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Timecode (2000), and The Loss of Sexual Innocence (1999).

Figgis was born in Carlisle, England in 1948. He studied music at Newcastle University before moving to London to pursue a career in music. He worked as a jazz musician and composer before turning to filmmaking in the late 1970s. His first feature film was Stormy Monday (1988), which starred Sting and Melanie Griffith.

Figgis' breakthrough came with Leaving Las Vegas (1995), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film also earned Nicolas Cage an Oscar for Best Actor. Figgis followed this success with Timecode (2000) and The Loss of Sexual Innocence (1999). Both films were critically acclaimed, with Timecode earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director.

In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Figgis has also composed music for several films, including Stormy Monday and Leaving Las Vegas. He has also written several books on filmmaking, including Digital Filmmaking: A Practical Guide to Making Low-Budget Movies (2003).

Figgis continues to work as a filmmaker today, most recently directing the drama Hotel Mumbai (2018). He is currently working on his next project, an adaptation of the novel The Last Days of Disco by Peter Ackroyd.
