Martin Parr is a British documentary photographer, photojournalist, and photobook collector. He is known for his candid and often humorous images of everyday life in Britain and around the world.
Born in Epsom, Surrey in 1952, Parr studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1970 to 1973. After graduating, he began working as a freelance photographer for various magazines and newspapers. In 1976 he joined the Magnum Photos agency and has since become one of its most prolific members.
Parr's work has been exhibited widely around the world, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His photographs have also been featured in numerous books including The Last Resort (1986), Common Sense (1999), Think of England (2004), Luxury (2008), and Small World (2011).
In addition to his photographic work, Parr is also an avid collector of photobooks. He has amassed an impressive collection of over 20,000 books which he has donated to the Tate Modern museum in London. He is also a founding member of the Photobook Club which promotes photobook culture through events and workshops.
Parr's work continues to be highly influential within contemporary photography circles and his images remain some of the most iconic representations of British life today.
