Mark Steinmetz is an American photographer known for his intimate and poetic images of everyday life. He was born in 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. He studied photography at the University of New Mexico and received his MFA from Yale University.
Steinmetz's work has been widely exhibited and published in books such as South Central (1996), Athens, Georgia (1998), The Players (2003), Greater Atlanta (2005), and Summertime (2008). His photographs have been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, Aperture, and DoubleTake.
In addition to his photographic work, Steinmetz has taught at various institutions including the School of Visual Arts in New York City, the International Center of Photography in New York City, and the Savannah College of Art & Design. He is currently a professor at Emory University in Atlanta.
Steinmetz's photographs are held in many public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the High Museum of Art in Atlanta; and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. He has received numerous awards for his work including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1999) and a Hasselblad Foundation Grant (2006).
