Mark Peckmezian is an Armenian-Canadian photographer and visual artist based in Toronto, Canada. He is best known for his vibrant and surreal portraits that explore themes of identity, culture, and the human condition.
Peckmezian was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1988. He moved to Canada with his family at the age of seven and grew up in Toronto. He studied photography at Ryerson University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2011.
Peckmezian's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, The Photographers' Gallery (London), The Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. His work has also been featured in publications such as Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, W Magazine, Dazed & Confused, and i-D Magazine.
In addition to his photography practice, Peckmezian is also a founding member of the collective "The Royal Academy" which focuses on creating art projects that explore identity politics through photography and video. He is also a member of the "Toronto Image Works" collective which works to promote photography as an art form within Toronto's creative community.
Peckmezian's work has been recognized with numerous awards including the Magenta Foundation Flash Forward Emerging Photographers Award (2012) and the Scotiabank Photography Award (2015). In 2017 he was named one of Canada's Top 30 Under 30 by Canadian Art magazine.
Peckmezian continues to live and work in Toronto where he continues to explore themes of identity through his photography practice.
