Joseph Szabo is an American photographer and educator who has been capturing the lives of teenagers since the 1970s. He is best known for his series of photographs titled "Teenage" which documented the lives of teenagers in Long Island, New York.
Szabo was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1944 and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1956. He studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and graduated with a BFA in 1968. After graduation, he worked as a freelance photographer for magazines such as Life, Look, and Sports Illustrated.
In 1972, Szabo began teaching photography at Malverne High School on Long Island. It was during this time that he began to document the lives of teenagers through his series "Teenage". The series captured intimate moments between friends and family members as well as everyday activities such as going to school or hanging out at the beach. The photographs were published in a book titled "Teenage" which was released in 1978.
Throughout his career, Szabo has continued to photograph teenagers and has published several other books including "Everyday Matters" (2002) and "The Last Roll" (2008). His work has been exhibited around the world including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the National Portrait Gallery in London. In addition to his photography career, Szabo continues to teach photography classes at Malverne High School where he has been since 1972.
