Giovanni Gastel (born in Milan, Italy in 1952) is an internationally renowned photographer and visual artist. He is best known for his fashion photography, which has been featured in magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle.
Gastel began his career as a photographer in the 1970s, working for Italian fashion magazines such as Grazia and Amica. He quickly gained recognition for his unique style of photography, which combined elements of fashion and art. His work was often characterized by its bold use of color and its focus on the female form.
In the 1980s, Gastel began to gain international recognition for his work. He was commissioned to shoot campaigns for major fashion houses such as Armani, Valentino, and Versace. His photographs were also featured in numerous exhibitions around the world.
In addition to his fashion photography, Gastel has also worked extensively with portraiture and documentary photography. He has photographed celebrities such as Madonna and Sophia Loren, as well as everyday people from around the world. His photographs have been published in books such as “The World Through My Eyes” (1995) and “Giovanni Gastel: A Life in Pictures” (2005).
Throughout his career, Gastel has received numerous awards for his work including the International Center of Photography Infinity Award (1996), the Hasselblad Award (2006), and the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Photography (2008). In 2010 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Italian Ministry of Culture.
Gastel continues to work today from his studio in Milan where he is currently working on a new book project about Italian culture and society.
