Danny Kasirye is a Ugandan-born photographer and visual artist based in London. He is best known for his vibrant and emotive portraiture, which often explores themes of identity, culture, and belonging.
Kasirye was born in Kampala, Uganda in 1988. He moved to the United Kingdom at the age of nine and grew up in London. His interest in photography began at an early age when he was given a camera as a gift from his father. He quickly developed a passion for the medium and began to explore its potential as an expressive art form.
Kasirye studied photography at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in 2011. After graduating, he worked as a freelance photographer for several years before establishing himself as an independent artist. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Tate Modern in London and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.
Kasirye’s work has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, The New York Times Magazine, Vogue Italia, and Dazed & Confused Magazine. He has also collaborated with brands such as Nike and Adidas on campaigns that explore themes of identity and belonging through photography. In 2020 he was awarded the prestigious Magnum Photos Graduate Award for his series ‘The Other Side’ which explored the experiences of African immigrants living in Europe.
Kasirye’s work is driven by his desire to create meaningful images that capture the beauty of everyday life while exploring issues of identity and belonging within contemporary society. His photographs are often characterized by their vibrant colors and emotive compositions that evoke feelings of nostalgia and longing for home.
