Carter Tanton is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and photographer. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1982 and grew up in the suburbs of Washington D.C. He began playing music at a young age, learning guitar and drums from his father. After high school he attended the University of Virginia where he studied music composition and photography.
In 2004, Carter released his debut album "The Painted World" which was met with critical acclaim. His follow up album "Tallahassee" was released in 2006 and featured collaborations with members of The National, The Walkmen, and The Shins. His third album "Freeclouds" was released in 2009 to further critical acclaim.
In addition to his musical career, Carter has also established himself as a successful photographer. His work has been featured in publications such as Rolling Stone Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and Vice Magazine. He has also shot for numerous bands including The National, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Grizzly Bear.
Carter currently lives in Brooklyn where he continues to write music and take photographs for various publications and bands. He is currently working on his fourth studio album which is set to be released later this year.
