Ahn Jooyoung is a South Korean photographer and visual artist. He is best known for his work in fashion, portraiture, and documentary photography.
Ahn was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1983. He studied photography at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and graduated with a degree in Visual Communication Design. After graduating, he worked as a freelance photographer for various magazines and newspapers.
In 2010, Ahn began to focus on fashion photography and portraiture. His work has been featured in numerous publications including Vogue Korea, Elle Korea, Harper's Bazaar Korea, Marie Claire Korea, and GQ Korea. He has also collaborated with many international brands such as Nike, Adidas, Samsung, LG Electronics, and Hyundai Motors.
In addition to his commercial work, Ahn has also produced several personal projects that explore themes of identity and culture. His series “The Korean Dream” (2012) was exhibited at the Seoul Museum of Art and received critical acclaim for its exploration of Korean identity through the lens of fashion photography. His other projects include “The Other Side” (2013), which examines the lives of North Korean defectors living in South Korea; “The Unseen” (2014), which documents the lives of homeless people living on the streets of Seoul; and “The Forgotten” (2015), which focuses on elderly people living alone in rural areas of South Korea.
Ahn's work has been exhibited internationally at galleries such as The Photographers' Gallery in London; The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago; The International Center for Photography in New York; The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo; and The National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul. In 2017 he was awarded the Grand Prize at the International Photography Awards for his series “The Forgotten”.
Ahn currently lives and works between Seoul and New York City.
