Model of the Week: Sophie Turnbull

Each week, we take the time to highlight one of our favorite emerging models. Last week, we profiled Italian beauty Benedetta Casaluci and this week we're turning our attention to Sophie Turnbull.

 

Not new to the fashion world, she has been on the radar for a while. Self-described as Professional, easy-going, resilient, the Mona Vale native was discovered at 14 at a music festival and has been modeling ever since. Outside of modeling, she is pursuing a design degree in visual communication. Sophie is definitely a model to keep an eye on and 2020 might be the year for her to shine.

 

We caught up with Sophie to talk about her career so far, her passion for modeling and her plans for the future.

Have you always wanted to be a model? If not, what did you want to be growing up?
I'd had a few people here and there tell me to consider modeling because of my height, but it really wasn't something I'd ever considered and was a very unknown industry to me. Throughout school, I was always very unsure as to what I wanted to do but went through stages of wanting to be an architect, a writer or a fashion designer. Currently, I'm at uni part-time doing a design degree majoring in visual communication.



How were you scouted?
I was scouted a few times before I ended up signing with an agency, the first time I was 14 and on my way to a music festival and then again when I was 15, once at a shopping mall and then at a vintage market. It wasn't until I was 16 that I decided to pursue it and signed with my agency Priscillas.



How would you describe yourself as model in three words?
Professional, easy-going, resilient



Your first modeling job?
A campaign for 'Valleygirl'. The first time I saw the pictures was when a friend from New Zealand sent me a picture of myself in their store windows in Auckland - I was super excited at the time as I had no clue that they had stores in other countries.



What is your favorite or most exciting aspect about being a model?
I love when I get to work with really passionate, creative people and help to bring their vision to life. Being able to travel for work and have the opportunity to live and work in cities on the other side of the world is also something I'm super grateful for.



Is there anyone that you admire as a role model and why?
I admire anyone that takes the time to stand up for their opinions and advocate for positive change in the world. This can be anyone from other models and celebrities as well as my close friends and family.



What is your dream shoot/campaign?
I'd love to be in one of Gucci's campaign videos, they're all so extravagant and iconic. Also (I know it's pretty cliche) but being on the cover of Vogue is definitely a dream.



Biggest lesson that modeling has taught you?
There's been so many things that I've learnt through modeling. Patience, resilience, and independence are the first that come to mind. I'm especially grateful for how much independence I've gained from living and navigating my way around different cities, constantly meeting new people from all over, and gaining experience working in professional environments.



How do you stay in shape?
I do a lot of walking on a regular basis between uni and castings. I also go to the gym when I have the time.



What do you think about fashion? What does it mean to you?
I think fashion is a really fun way to express yourself.



How would you describe your style?
My style is minimal, comfortable and girly. Soft, flowy dresses, oversized jumpers and baggy jeans are my go-to. I rarely wear bright colors or anything too tight. I'm also trying to buy more clothing from vintage stores as each item is much more unique and buying second hand is a lot more environmentally friendly!

Denim



Heels or flats?
Flats! I'm already taller than most people around me so I rarely wear anything higher than a small heeled boot



Vintage or contemporary fashion?
A bit of both!



What is your guilty pleasure?
Anything with cheese - Pizza, Nachos, crackers with brie



If you were an emoji, which would you be and why?
Probably the cat emoji, cats are definitely my spirit animal



When you're not busy modeling, what are some of your favorite things to do?
Between modeling and spending 3 days a week of uni my free time is pretty limited. I spend most of it with my family, friends and my boyfriend. My ideal days are spent lying in the sun with a book, catching up for coffee with friends, or picnics on the beach on summer evenings.



What are you working on now and what do you dream of happening in the future?
Right now I'm just focusing on making it through the uni semester. I have a 4-month break coming up over summer so I will hopefully spend that time focusing on modeling and possibly spend time working overseas.
