Prada launches sustainable version of its iconic nylon bag

Prada is taking another step in the sustainable direction.

After announcing earlier this year that it would completely exclude fur from future collections, the Italian fashion house is releasing its iconic nylon bags entirely made from sustainable and recycled materials.

Titled Re-Nylon, the new collection in collaboration with textile fiber manufacturer Aquafil consists of the classic nylon bags including the shoulder bag, the belt bag, and the backpack. The nylon used in the production of these bags is made from plastic waste from the ocean, fishing nets, and textile fibers and can be recycled infinitely without loss of quality. The proceeds of the sustainable bags will be donated to sustainability projects in collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage organization.

'This project underscores our continued commitment to promoting responsible business,' said Lorenzo Bertelli, Head of Marketing and Communications for the Prada Group, in an official statement. 'This collection will enable us to do our part and develop products without consuming new resources.'

Prada started selling the nylon bag in 1980 and was the first luxury fashion house to produce bags from the synthetic material. 700,000 meters of nylon is used annually to make the nylon bags which is why the Fashion House also plans to use only recycled nylon in its collections from 2021. The new collection is promoted through a video series in collaboration with National Geographic.
