Loewe Presents Exhibition Of Malian Photographer Malick Sidibe

Spanish luxury fashion house Loewe and the Loewe Foundation have unveiled an exhibition on late Malian photographer Malick Sidibe, at this year's PhotoEspana festival in Madrid.

Curated by Maria Millan, the exhibition features over 45 works from Sidibe that depict a joyful new urban scene that unfolded in the city of Bamako after Mali's independence from France in 1960.

Comprising of portraits, documentary photographs of street life, nightlife and youth culture during the 1960s and 1970s, it captures the essence of a society in transition. The exhibition is part of Loewe and the Loewe Foundation's ongoing exploration of photography's role in capturing social change.

Sidibe was known as 'the eye of Bamako' for his unique monochrome images of an emerging youth culture. His influence is pertinent today and bears witness to a crucial period in Mali's history.

The Loewe Malick Sidibe exhibition runs through 23 September at the Leica Gallery, Calle de Jose Ortega y Gasset, 34, Madrid.
