Chanel, Prada and Gucci sign environmental pact

Fashion giants Chanel, Prada, and Gucci have signed a 'Fashion Pact' in order to curb the apparel industry's environmental impact.

Thirty-two large fashion companies including Nike, H&M, Armani, Calvin Klein, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermes, Burberry, and Versace have signed the agreement at the initiative of Kering CEO Francois-Henri Pinault. Together these companies produce nearly 150 brands and represent thirty percent of the entire fashion industry's output by volume. Louis Vuitton is the only notable name that has not signed the treaty.

The pact which is set to be unveiled at the G7 summit this weekend in Biarritz, France is not binding, but the intention is for the companies to report annually on their progress. Participating companies are expected to actively contribute to reducing climate warming. Clear steps must be taken within the companies to eliminate disposable plastic packaging by the end of the next decade and becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. It will be up to these companies to change the polluting activities of the fashion industry and the ecosystems that are threatened by it.
