Chanel designs costumes for the Paris Opera ballet

French luxury brand Chanel has designed the costumes for the 2021 dance season of the Opera de Paris.

The ballet which began on January 27th was live streamed via the digital platform 'L'Opera chez soi' due to the ongoing uncertainties brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The first performance of the season was 'Grand Pas Classique' a ballet choreographed by Victor Gsovsky and featured Etoile dancers Valentine Colasante and Hugo Marchand. The duo wore costumes specially created by Chanel under the direction of Virginie Viard that were delicately embroidered by hand in the ateliers at the House of Lesage. Featuring celestial and poetic motifs, the dreamlike costumes illuminate both feminine and masculine silhouettes and renew the timeless magic of the ballet.

In addition, Chanel also designed the costumes of the dancers for Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's contemporary choreographic creation 'Exposure', set to music by music pioneer Woodkid.

The collaboration between Opera de Paris and Chanel goes back to 2018, and Virginie Viard designed the costumes for the first time in 2019. Historically, Gabrielle Chanel had created costumes for several ballets, including 'Le Train Bleu' in 1924, while Karl Lagerfeld had worked with French choreographer Benjamin Millepied and created a costume for 'Swan Lake' in 2009.

The Paris Opera Ballet performances are scheduled from February to July 2021 and information will be available on its website and mobile app.
