Brand of the Week: Veja

Each week, we take the time to highlight our favorite Fashion brands. Before the holidays, we profiled Danish clothing brand Skall Studio, and this week we've decided to feature Veja.

The French ethical footwear and accessories was founded in 2004 by childhood friends Sebastien Kopp and Francois-Ghislain Morillion with a line of socially conscious sneakers inspired by vintage volleyball shoes.

The word 'Veja' is a literal translation of the Portuguese-Brazilian for 'look' - alluring to: 'look beyond the sneakers, look at how they are made'. The essence of the brand is its commitment to ethical business practices from sourcing and the production cycle, right through to packaging, distribution. It works with Brazilian farmers to produce its minimal, subtly branded low-tops using organic cotton, wild rubber, and other sustainable materials. Fifteen years later the brand still continues to work with small, independent Brazilian producers from when they first started.

Unlike other labels in the sneaker game, Veja adheres to fashion's golden rule of relevancy while forgoing traditional advertising and credits its success to word-of-mouth marketing. The label has a cult following with the likes of Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg, as well David Beckham among others. Veja is also partnered with Atelier Sans Frontieres, an organization that helps people who have been incarcerated or are otherwise struggling to find work, to employ workers to prepare orders.
