American Apparel Rehires Creative Director Iris Alonzo

US clothing manufacturer American Apparel has rehired former creative director Iris Alonzo.

Ms Alonzo was dismissed in June, following the ousting of controversial CEO Dov Charney. Scott Brubaker was then named interim CEO in September.

A close source to the company told WWD, "Charney has had no impact one way or the other on any personnel decisions being made. [Interim ceo] Scott Brubaker is the one ultimately making those decisions, not Dov."

With things being a bit crazy over at American Apparel as of late, the executive board made a move toward stability by rehiring Alonzo with a view to her protecting and evolving the brand as it negotiates a difficult period for the company.

Alonzo is a vocal supporter of Charney and her return is seen in some circles to reflect the growing influence Charney is beginning to exert once more at the company he founded some 25 years ago.Though he operates as a consultant, he’s certainly not content to let things continue this way. “Dov is fighting hard to regain the CEO job. Dov is being very difficult in terms of accepting anything less than the CEO position.” a source told WWD.

American Apparel has landed in a sticky situation. The company has struggled financially in recent times and is thought to be planning closures of underperforming UK stores, including their flagship Covent Garden store in London.
