Doutzen Kroes receives Sustainability Award

Dutch supermodel Doutzen Kroes was presented the Social Media Changemaker Award for using her platform for activism during the Green Carpet Fashion Awards in Milan.

'More then ever I realize the incredible power of social media and how important it is that we can raise awareness for what we stand for. It was amazing to witness what Livia Firth and her team from Eco Age created and to be in a room full of people that believe that our industry can be more eco-friendly and supportive of sustainable technology and design. We will need to take responsibility! Thank you,' the 34-year-old model said in an Instagram post.


Held in the famous Teatro alla Scala in Milan at the end of Milan Fashion Week on Sunday, September 22, 2019, the third edition of the event was hosted by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana in collaboration with Eco-Age. Founded in 2007 by Livia Giuggioli Firth and her husband Colin Firth, Eco-Age is a company that advises (fashion) companies in terms of sustainability.

The star-studded ceremony was attended by the likes of Adut Akech, Stella McCartney, Dame Anna Wintour, Valentino Garavani, Alessandra Ambrosio,Barbara Palvin, Elsa Hosk, Amber Valletta, Candice Swanepoel, and Toni Garrn amongst many others who all gathered to celebrate and award the changemakers, disruptors, forward thinkers and organisations that are shaping the fashion industry and steering it towards a sustainable future.

A total of 12 awards were handed out during the evening among which Valentino Garavani, founder of Valentino, was presented with The GCFA Legacy Award; Stella McCartney, was awarded The GCFA Groundbreaker Award; Flavia La Rocca with The Franca Sozzani GCFA Award for Best Emerging Designer; Francois Henri-Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering Group was awarded The GCFA Visionary Award and Max Mara and Zegna The CMNI in Recognition of Sustainability Award.


This is not the first award that Doutzen Kroes has won an award. In 2009 she won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dutch Model Awards while in 2014 she became Glamour's Woman of the Year and in 2015 she was awarded Most Influential Model Online by Elle.
