Legendary swimsuit label Vilebrequin is marking the next chapter of an era with a new bathing suit line.
The brand which was founded in Saint-Tropez in the early 1970s has launched a new silhouette inspired by the mythical mixed swimsuits born in the Golden Age of the French Riviera. The French Riviera Swimsuit is a cult cut, celebrating the avant-garde spirit of the Golden Age.
The model for men is called Charles and is apt for a self-confident man to wear the one-piece, while Marylore for Women is also inspired by the classic cuts, with two strategically placed cut-outs, but not confused with the more heavily draped patterns of yesteryear. Both are reminiscent of an era when a holiday was a glamorous occasion and life felt as light as a warm sea breeze for two weeks.
The French Riviera has always been a fashionable winter retreat for Russian and European aristocrats for several centuries. The most prestigious figures of the 1920s and 1930s wandered about the city showing off their best summer attires. Back then, the one piece was a hit, for both men and women. Over the years, bathing suits became swim trunks and bikinis, but in the 1980s, the mythical swimsuit made a big come back to be worn by icons such as Karl Lagerfeld.
