Peter Lindbergh passes away at 74

German photographer and film director Peter Lindbergh is dead.

The news was officially announced this morning on his Instagram account. 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Lindbergh on September 3rd, 2019, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife Petra, his first wife Astrid, his four sons Benjamin, Jeremy, Simon, Joseph and seven grandchildren. He leaves a big void.' No information regarding the cause of his death has been given.

One of the greatest photographers of our time, Lindbergh, was born as Peter Brodbeck in 1944 Wartheland (which today belongs to Poland) and grew up in Duisburg. He began his career as an assistant to German photographer Hans Lux but moved to Paris in 1978. Thereafter he became famous for his black-and-white cinematic photographs that redefined the standards of beauty.

Lindbergh gained international acclaim with his photograph of five young women (Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatiana Patitz, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford) in downtown New York, for British Vogue's legendary January 1990 cover that marked the inauguration of a new generation of models - the 'Supermodel'.

Lindbergh's most recent work was the September issue of British Vogue that features 15 women from the worlds of politics, sport, and the arts and was guest-edited by Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. 'All the women were different, but they each had something special,' said Lindbergh on making the cover. 'Sometimes I worry I am becoming an old shmuck, but it was wonderful to photograph this project.'

Prior to that, he photographed Helene Fischer for the cover of Vogue Germany's January 2019 issue which marked the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the magazine.

Lindbergh and his work will remain unforgotten.
