The Institut Francais de la Mode (IFM) launched its first online fashion course.
Titled 'Understanding Fashion: From Business to Culture' the course offers a dual approach to fashion, both as a cultural phenomenon and as a creative industry. Hosted by the FutureLearn platform under the supervision of Benjamin Simmenauer Ecole Normale Superieure graduate and teacher at the IFM, the MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) gives one a transdisciplinary approach to the phenomena of contemporary fashion.
'I designed the course to be open to all. There are no technical prerequisites, you can follow the course as soon as you are interested in the fashion sector, without necessarily having taken courses in marketing, textiles or sociology. A MOOC is a platform that is alive. The students form a community in which they can interact with each other, ask us questions and approach each module in their own way,' said Simmenauer of the course.
The course is structured into 4 chapters split over four weeks and also features input from designers as Simon Porte Jacquemus, Christelle Kocher, Paul Smith, and CEOs of Chanel, LVMH Fashion Group, Yves Saint Laurent and Hermes. The first session which began this week explored the links between fashion and modernity. The remaining sessions will run over the course of the next 3 weeks and will explore Fashion and society, Fashion as a language and Fashion and consumption.
The IFM 'Understanding Fashion: From Business to Culture' will conclude on December 22. It is free to join and study, however, those wanting to qualify for a certificate can upgrade. Enroll at www.ifmparis.fr
