The 24th Annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards was a star-studded ceremony at Carnegie Hall, New York City. Celebrating female empowerment and honouring women's achievements the event held on Monday night was power packed as Politicians, activists, and celebrities filled the grand venue to celebrate how women are changing the world.
Actresses Lupita Nyong'o and Laverne Cox, fashion designer
Sarah Burton, United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power and Chelsea Clinton were among those awarded Women of the Year awards by Glamour magazine. Other honorees included Fashion model & philanthropist
Natalia Vodianova, Acxtress Mindy Kaling, Robin Roberts, and deep-sea scientist Sylvia Earle.
Natalia Vodianova was recognized for her Naked Heart Foundation which she funded in 2004 to help children in Russia with disabilities. She thanked her mother, saying
"I'm going to dedicate this special award to all the women out there who stand by their children,". There was a standing ovation for the Fashion Model's mom who was visiting the United States for the first time.
The event also had Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton who thanked Anna Wintour in her acceptance speech.
"I'd like to thank Anna Wintour for calling me at a time when my whole world was falling apart and giving me the confidence to believe I could even begin to take on this impossible job," she said. Burton is best known for designing Kate Middleton's wedding gown. She became creative director of
Alexander McQueen in 2010, following the designer's death, and has been credited with boosting the British fashion industry.
Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive said of the honorees' work:
"None of it is easy, and all of it is heroic."
The red carpet was also a star studded guest event as several models and Fashion Industry folk made their way.
Victoria's Secret Angels
Karlie Kloss and
Doutzen Kroes showcased their amazing figures ahead of their catwalk at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show which is just three weeks away.
Coco Rocha, Freida Pinto, Anna Wintour and
Karen Elson were also seen.
