Gucci has announced the location of its Resort 2019 show.
After Westminster Abbey in London and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Kering owned Italian brand will hold its presentation in the necropolis of Alyscamps in Arles, southern France.
The UNESCO world heritage site is famous for its Roman heritage: stone sarcophagi that line up along an approximately 500-meter-long avenue, and the Christian Saint Genesius was buried in the cemetery. Alyscamps was the final resting place of St. Trophimus, who is believed to have been the first Christian bishop of Arles.
Since taking over the helm, Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele has carefully selected inspiring locations for its resort shows. First to New York in the "Dia" Museum of Art (Resort 2016), the second to London in Westminster Abbey (Resort 2017) and the third to the Uffizi in Florence (Resort 2018).
As with all of its resort shows, the destination plays a major influence for the direction of the collection. It is highly likely that Michele will be inspired by early Christianity or Southern French traditions for the collection shown in Alyscamps.
With the fashion house entering into an official partnership with the city of Arles, the Gucci show will be the first event of this magnitude to be held at Alyscamps on May 30, 2018.
