France gets its first official fashion museum thanks to Chanel


Paris will soon have a permanent museum of fashion to house its permanent collections.

With the sponsorship of Chanel, and support of the City, The new underground space of The Palais Galliera will be devoted to the history of fashion from the 18th century to the present day. Comprising of 200,000 garments, accessories and documents, it will be named Salles Gabrielle Chanel, The Gabrielle Chanel Rooms.

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, thanked the French fashion house for their support saying: 'I would like to thank the House of Chanel for its valued support of the Palais Galliera. Thanks to this prestigious sponsorship, our capital will soon have the first permanent fashion museum in France. The City of Paris is proud to be able to open this exceptional space to Parisians and visitors from all over the world'.

'Thanks to the valuable support of the House of Chanel, the history of fashion, the excellency of French Haute Couture, the savoir-faire and creativity will now have a prestigious place in these new rooms that Palais Galliera will proudly inaugurate in 2019,' added Olivier Saillard, Director of Palais Galliera.

While the French capital has been host of many famous fashion shows, and The Palais Galleria has had many temporary exhibitions, it has never had a permanent year-round collection - until now. The new gallery is slated to open late 2019 alongside a bookshop.
