Following on the heels of its
first-ever virtual cruise show for its Cruise 2021 collection Chanel has unveiled its Fall/Winter 2020/21 Haute Couture Collection.
Marked by a desire for shimmering opulence and sophistication, the new collection is where classic Chanel heritage is animated by punk details with a dash of edgy romanticism. Influenced by Germanic paintings and the simplicity and rigor of the abbey at Aubazine, where Gabrielle Chanel had been placed as a child, the collection comprises of 30 looks accompanied with jewels from the CHANEL High Jewelry collections.
From bolero jackets with painted laces and tweeds made of silver-streaked ribbon, and diamond-like braiding on black trouser suits, to short dresses with cinched waists and corolla skirts, as well as long dresses recalling the Grand Siecle allure of past, the collection features dazzling detailing of embroideries, laces, tweeds, and jeweled buttons.
'I was thinking about a punk princess coming out of 'Le Palace' at dawn,' said Chanel's creative director Virginie Viard.
'With a taffeta dress, big hair, feathers and lots of jewelry. This collection is more inspired by Karl Lagerfeld than Gabrielle Chanel. Karl would go to 'Le Palace', he would accompany these very sophisticated and very dressed up women, who were very eccentric too.'
In conjunction with the unveiling, Chanel tapped models Adut Akech and Rianne Van Rompaey to star in a video and lookbook shot by Mikael Jansson. Additionally, the luxury fashion house worked with French director and writer, Loic Prigent to create three behind-the-scenes videos that celebrate the savoir-faire of the four Haute Couture ateliers.
