Mary Janes are making a comeback at Chanel.
Known for their comfort with comparatively flat heel and wide buckle at the front, the shoe which was one of Coco Chanel's favorite's in the 1920s and a symbol of emancipation has been given new life by Karl Lagerfeld.
For inspiration, Lagerfeld looked to Coco's life in the South of France and referenced photos of Coco on board the Flying Cloud in 1926, the yacht owned by the Duke of Westminster as well a shot in Deauville from 1920.
For Chanel's new cruise '19 collection, which showed in May at the Grand Palais in Paris, Lagerfeld reinvented them as party shoes for girls adding a touch of modernity with a sporty interpretation: a silver one entirely covered with sequins, the classic one with heel and a pair with rubber sole. He and also created a series of tweed minidresses and nautical-inspired looks for the collection. As childish and playful as 100 years ago the resurrected Mary Jane's are strong and feminine as ever.
