New York-based brand Telfar is making its foray into sportswear.
The cult label best known for its Unisex shopping tote bag nicknamed the Bushwick Birkin bag will be making the uniforms of Liberia's team of track and field competitors in the delegation at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics which will kick off on July 23.
The collaboration came about when sprinter Emmanuel Matadi who represented the country at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the African country's Liberia's Olympic attache, Kouty Mawenh, came calling.
A 70-piece line full of unitards, leggings, duffel bags and racing spikes as well as select styles of merch with the Liberian flag and the Telfar logo were designed by Telfar Clemens and his longtime creative director Babak Radboy over the course of four months.
A limited collection of athletic pieces inspired by the Olympics will be released by the brand on its direct-to-consumer platform while later in September a full workout and sports gear line will be launched. According to Telfar it will be a timeless collection that they want to sell for years to come.
'It's all things you can't find. They said, Go crazy So I did. They might have been surprised by some of it, but I haven't heard a no. Just excitement,' Clemens told the New York Times.
With his foray into sportswear at the Olympics, Telfar joins a long line of designers who've made the jump from the runway to the Olympics, including Issey Miyaki (Lithuania), Ralph Lauren (USA), Stella McCartney (Great Britain), and Dsquared (Italy).
