Stella McCartney launches First-Ever Mushroom Leather Bag

British designer Stella McCartney has unveiled the world's first-ever luxury bag made from sustainable mushroom leather.

Made in association with California-based material solutions company Bolt Threads, the bag was first introduced during Stella McCartney's Spring/Summer 2022 fashion show in Paris, in October 2021. Aptly called 'Frayme Mylo' it was inspired by McCartney's iconic Falabella bag and took over 5,000 iterations of the material. Hand-crafted by Italian artisans, it features an oversized recyclable aluminium chain strap that runs around the bag, as well as a zamac statement medallion.

McCartney's partnership with Bolt Threads harks back to 2017 and she has been an early supporter of mycelium or mushroom leather. Other brands backing Bolt Threads's consortium include Lululemon, Kering, and Adidas.

'Bringing the first-ever luxury bag made from Mylo to market is a massive milestone for conscientious consumers, the biomaterials industry, and the future of luxury fashion,' said Bolt Threads founder and CEO Dan Widmaier in a press release.

Priced at 2,490 USD, the Stella McCartney Frayme Mylo bag will be launched in a limited edition of 100 pieces from July 1 exclusively on the Stella McCartney website and its boutiques globally.
