Cult New York label Hood By Air returns after a two-year break.
Creative Director and co-founder Shayne Oliver announced the relaunch in an interview with Canadian online retailer Ssense but did not name a specific date.
'No one knows how our comeback will be received,' Oliver said.
'We are all hoping for the best, but we also understand some time has passed.'
The designer further added that prior to going on a break he had the feeling of rushing from one extreme to the next, instead of developing his own vision. However, during the brands' hiatus, he had several thoughts on mass culture and consumption and decided that he no longer wanted to classify Hood By Air in the old-fashioned, faster fashion cycle.
This is not the first time that Hood By Air has returned from a hiatus. During 2009-2012 the label was paused after its original co-founder Raul Lopez had departed to launch his own line and namesake label, Luar. Oliver resurrected the label in 2012 with conceptual artist Leilah Weinraub as CEO. During its 2017 pause, Oliver designed for Helmut Lang and co-operated with Diesel, Longchamp and sportswear brand Colmar.
Since its emergence Hood By Air has come to be known for its radical aesthetic and the bridge between high fashion and underground: gender-neutral silhouettes, and big logo prints. In 2014, it won the LVMH Special Jury Prize and, the following year, the CFDA Prize - two of the most prestigious awards in the fashion industry. For the moment the news of its return should give fans of the label a sigh of relief.
