H&M has launched its new Transparency Initiative.
The Swedish high street giant intends to provide customers more transparency with additional information about each product it sells. Details such as the suppliers and the materials used, the country of manufacture, the name and the number of employees in the respective production company will now also be shown. This applies to fashion as well as furnishing products of H&M Home. Previously, such detailed information was only available in its sustainable fashion line H&M Conscious collection.
'By being open and transparent about where our products are made we hope to set the bar for our industry and encourage customers to make more sustainable choices. With transparency comes responsibility, making transparency such an important factor to help create a more sustainable fashion industry,' Head of Sustainability at H&M Isak Roth said in a press release.
While the new move is intended to further pave the way to a more transparent business. However, customers have to rely on the information provided by the company and the detailed information for each product is only available if the data has already been entered into the new transparency system which unfortunately is not always the case with older products. Nevertheless, it is a welcome step in the direction of sustainability and ethical fashion.
