Dior's Lady Art project returns for a 7th edition

French fashion house Dior's Lady Art project has returned for a seventh edition this month.

The brand has enlisted 11 artists tasked with reinterpreting and transforming the iconic bag in their own ways. From Egypt to Qatar to the United States, the creatives this time include Egyptian artist Ghada Amer, Brian Calvin, Sara Cwynar, American painter Alex Gardner, Shara Hughes, Dorothy Iannone, Minjung Kim, Zhenya Machneva, Bouthayna al Muftah, Francoise Petrovitch, and Chinese artist Wang Yuyang.

Driven by a spirit of innovation and limitless inventiveness, each artists' transformation is a tribute to singularity and savoir-faire, opening the doors of the imagination. Ghada Amer adorned the bag with precious stones and sequins, hand embroidered patchworks with words like "strong", "loving", "resilient", and "determined" to evoke qualities associated with women. Alex Gardner transposed one of his iconic drawings onto the bag transforming it into an entrancing painting with multiple effects, playing with colors and materials. Wang Yuyang adorned the bag with representations of his works, reinvented using traditional embroidery methods, and combined with new creative techniques. Altogether, each of the exceptional reinventions is a celebration of joy and freedom.

Dior launched its Lady Art project in 2016 to give artists carte blanche to reimagine Lady Dior. The handbag's perennial design has endured since 1995, when Bernadette Chirac, the First Lady of France, gifted one to Princess Diana.

To coincide with the launch of the Project a video series has been released and features short videos highlighting the intricate savoir-faire behind each stunning creation.
