Chanel is dropping the use of animal fur and exotic skins from May 2019.
The French fashion house will no longer use snakes, crocodiles, lizard leather and fur in its products and collections. The announcement came just hours ahead of its Metiers d'Art show, which took place in New York last week.
'We are constantly evaluating our suppliers to ensure that our expectations of integrity and transparency are met. Our experience, however, teaches us that it is becoming increasingly difficult to make exotic materials that meet our ethical standards,' the brand said in a statement.
In addition, the brand said that the decision to ban these exotic products is because it is difficult to produce the materials in a responsible manner. Going forward Chanel will also ensure that all of its leathers are sourced from the farming sector, from animals reared for meat and the use of other materials.
Chanel is the latest brand after Coach, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Diane von Furstenberg, Versace and Michael Kors who have joined the fur-free movement and have committed to promoting sustainable fashion.
