Blumarine appoints David Koma as Creative Director

Italian Fashion house Blumarine has announced the appointment of David Koma as its new creative director.

His appointment comes after the surprise departure of Walter Chiapponi who exited the company after only one collection which he debuted in February 2024 during Milan Fashion Week.

Koma is known for his sculptural silhouettes and striking aesthetic that has earned him a prominent place in the contemporary fashion. The Georgian-born designer studied Fine Art in St Petersburg before moving to London in 2003 to attend Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where he studied under the late Professor Louise Wilson, OBE.

After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2009, he launched his eponymous London-based fashion house that has been a fixture during London Fashion Week. Koma replaced Nicola Formichetti at the helm at Thierry Mugler in 2013, a role he held for nearly 4 years but stepped down to focus on his namesake label.

'Blumarine embodies a unique blend of sensuality, timeless glamour and elegance that I always admired, and it is an honor to be able to write the next chapter in the brand's illustrious history. I am excited to celebrate Blumarine's rich creative heritage while infusing it with my own modern vision. The brand's feminine aesthetic deeply resonates with me, making this journey feel incredibly authentic. I am eager to craft collections that inspire and captivate our audience, ushering in an exciting new era of innovation and creativity at this esteemed house,' said Koma on his appointment.

'David Koma's aesthetic captured me from the beginning. I am sure that David will be able to interpret Blumarine's codes to perfection, thanks to his vision and stylistic sensitivity, characterized by an overwhelming femininity,' Marco Marchi, Sole Director of Exelite, the holding company that owns Blumarine said in a post on it's LinkedIn page.

Koma will present his first collection for Blumarine during the pre-fall season in May-June 2025.
