Volcom, Inc. is an American clothing manufacturer and owner of Volcom Entertainment. Based in Costa Mesa, California, it was founded in 1991 by Richard "Wooly" Woolcott and Tucker "T-Dawg" Hall. The company caters to the surfing,skateboarding and snowboarding markets, born out of the founders' own experiences with these sports. In April 2005, the Company changed its name to Volcom, Inc. On June 29, 2005, Volcom Inc. made an initial public offering on NASDAQ, pricing 4.69 million shares at $19 a share and raising $89 million. The underwriters of the IPO were Wachovia Securities, D.A. Davidson and Piper Jaffray.
Volcom is known for its elaborate uses of the "stone" logo and its slogan "Youth Against Establishment". It is also involved in a campaign that it calls "Let the Kids Ride Free".
In early 2008, Volcom made its first acquisition, taking ownership of sunglasses brand Electric Visual. Transworld Business's Joshua Hunter reported on January 16th 2008 that "The oldest rumor in the industry came to fruition in the early hours of the morning as news hit the wire that Volcom, Inc. has reached an agreement with Electric Visual to acquire the brand for $25.3 millions."
Volcom has retail locations. The first store was opened on November 23, 2002 and is located in Los Angeles, CA on 126 La Brea. Other California locations include stores in San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Berkeley. There are also 6 other locations in the US, on the island of Maui, HI, one is in Lahaina and the other in Whalers Village in the Ka'anapali Whalers Village Mall. In Waikiki on Oahu, HI there is another store, as well as locations in Boulder, CO, Las Vegas, NV, and New York, NY. Volcom has more recently opened several international stores, beginning with Hossegor, France, followed by 2 locations in Indonesia (Kuta near Bali and Bemo Corner in Bali), Tokyo, Japan, Durban, South Africa, Bangkok Thailand, London, England, Santiago, Chile, São Paulo, Brazil, Lisboa, Portugal and Stuttgart, Germany. Recently the first retail store was opened in Canada, located in Calgary, Alberta.
