Born from a rich lineage of glove craftsmanship, TR Handschuhe is a brand with a fascinating history that spans several generations. The story begins in the 1960s, with Erwin Riemer, who co-founded the Austrian glove brand RIKA alongside a business partner. The brand was a celebrated success, producing both fashion and sports gloves and even becoming the official glove outfitter for the Olympic national skiing teams of Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein during the 1964 Winter Olympics hosted in Innsbruck, Austria. The innovation and modern design of their products, including the knuckle fold for increased comfort and the bright rainbow colors, helped establish the RIKA glove brand in the winter sports world.
RIKA continued to thrive, supplying gloves to prestigious institutions such as the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and the Austrian police, along with other authorities. The brand even saw its products being sold at renowned retailers like Saks 5th Avenue in New York and Harrods in London. However, upon the passing of Erwin Riemer in 2001, the business ceased, and his son Thomas Riemer, who had served as the sales director for Europe, stepped away from the glove industry.
Six years later, in a surprising turn of events, the owners of Vienna's oldest glove shop, which was founded in 1845, were on the brink of retirement and approached Thomas Riemer to take over their business. With the extinction of Austrian glove makers, Riemer was seen as the only young man capable of carrying on the tradition of glove making, thanks to the knowledge and workmanship he had inherited from his father.
Taking on this mantle, Thomas Riemer started to rebuild the legacy of quality glove making under the brand name TR Handschuhe Wien. He quickly noticed that the gloves manufactured by French or Italian makers, which he was selling in his shop, were not fitting his Austrian, German, or Swiss customers as well as they should. Armed with his father's old glove patterns, Riemer traveled to Hungary to seek out experienced manufacturers and craftsmen. The gloves, initially manufactured in Hungarian factories, were so successful that other shops in Vienna requested supplies from Riemer. In 2009, he opened his own workshop in Hungary, employing experienced glove cutters and highly skilled glove makers, some of whom had worked with his father and were now well over 60 or even 70 years old.
That same year, the Spanish Riding School in Vienna requested that Riemer continue his father's tradition and manufacture gloves for their riders. These gloves, made in doeskin, feature a special knot-stitch seam, a technique considered an art by the glover's guild.
In the years that followed, TR Handschuhe has continued to thrive and grow. The brand's products are known for their high quality, exclusive design, and a diverse range of styles suitable for both men and women. The gloves are made from a variety of premium materials, including sheepskin, Peccary leather, and even exotic crocodile and lizard leather. The brand's success is evident in its presence in online shops such as Kastner & Öhler, where customers can find a wide range of TR Handschuhe products.
Most recently, in 2023, the brand offered an end-of-season sale with discounts of 20% on selected items, highlighting its commitment to providing customers with quality products at attractive prices.
From its beginnings in the Olympic winter sports world to its current position as a premium glove manufacturer, TR Handschuhecontinues to honor its rich history while constantly evolving to meet the needs of its diverse customer base. With an unwavering commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of its customers, TR Handschuhe stands as a proud testament to the enduring appeal of traditional glove making in the modern world.
