The SUSA-Werke is a German corset manufacturer with a rich history dating back to 1859. It was founded by Gottfried Schneider in the midst of Germany's industrialization, in the small town of Heubach. Schneider began with a small corset manufacturing business, operating out of a local restaurant, and quickly expanded to a larger facility as demand for his products grew.
In 1863, the company expanded its production to include the machine-made manufacture of corset closures and springs. The company exported a large portion of its products to America, England, and Denmark, but also found success within Germany itself.
In the late 1800s, a new technological advancement, the sewing machine, changed the corset industry, and the SUSA-Werke adapted with the times, switching to the production of sewn corsets. This, along with the leadership of Schneider's son Julius, led to continued growth and success for the company in the years to come.
