Stone Island is an Italian menswear brand that has made its mark in the upscale segment of the fashion industry. It was established in 1982 by the Italian designer Massimo Osti, who also founded the C.P. Company in 1974. Osti introduced Stone Island as a progressive secondary line alongside his primary C.P. Company collection. The brand quickly became a pioneer in special dyeing techniques and unconventional surface treatments, becoming one of the first to utilize the stonewash effect on a large scale.
The name "Stone Island" was initially proposed by Osti's wife Daniela, symbolizing the strength of stone and the freedom of an island. The secondary line was created to introduce innovative fabric developments that were too progressive for the C.P. Company's main collection.
In 1983, Osti sold 50% of C.P. Company, including Stone Island, to the GFT Group, an Italian textile and licensing fashion manufacturer. Carlo Rivetti, son of the GFT owner, was appointed Managing Director of C.P. Company SpA in 1989. When C.P. Company SpA was to be separated from the GFT Group in 1993, Carlo Rivetti and his sister Cristina, through their company Rivetex, acquired the company.
Stone Island has seen significant development and innovation under Osti and later designers. In the 1980s, the brand introduced new, sometimes futuristic-looking product developments that often involved the creation of special industrial machines and often came with patents. Some of these included a thin rubber layer on one side of cotton, wool, or flax fiber to create waterproofing, as well as fabric that changes color upon heat exposure after a quartz treatment.
Carlo Rivetti sold the C.P. Company in early 2010 to focus on Stone Island and its development, especially in Germany. The Rivetti family sold a 30% stake of Stone Island to Temasek Holdings from Singapore in 2017 as part of international expansion plans. In 2020, Moncler announced plans to purchase the 50.1% stake of Carlo Rivetti, nearly 20% of the Rivetti family's stake in Stone Island, and the 30% of Temasek. The takeover bid valued Stone Island at €1.15 billion.
Stone Island introduced Stone Island Junior, its boys' collection, in 2006. The brand's signature removable compass badge, a rectangular fabric label with an embroidered compass motif, is one of its most recognizable features. This badge is usually attached with two buttons on the left sleeve of jumpers and jackets.
Stone Island's commitment to innovative design and high-quality materials is clearly reflected in Stone Island Junior, the brand's boys' collection, which was introduced in 2006. This line includes a variety of products, such as bomber jackets and cargo pants, all embodying the ethos and design innovation that Stone Island is famous for. A distinguishing feature of the brand is its removable compass badge, a rectangular fabric label with an embroidered compass motif, usually attached with two buttons on the left sleeve of jumpers and jackets. Stone Island Junior carries forward this signature element, maintaining a strong connection with the parent brand and its rich heritage.
