about
The rules of Stolen Girlfriends Club: a youthful rebellious spirit, a healthy sense of humour, and the ability to entertain and make things matter.
The founders of the boutique brand, Dan Gosling, Luke Harwood and Marc Moore, are a New Zealand based trio with backgrounds in surfing. Their approach to the fashion business is as relative outsiders: they have no professional design training and began simply by making clothes for themselves and their friends.
Originally established as an art project in 2005, Stolen Girlfriends Club was intended as an umbrella name for creative projects to come under. Installations, exhibitions, parties, films and collaborations were soon followed by a foray into the world of fashion. Printed T-shirts formed the backbone of the label in its early stages, with one printed tee quickly becoming a cult item around town. The ‘Stolen Girlfriends Club Says Relax’ T-shirt – their take on the iconic 80s print – helped sum up the label’s ironic attitude and aesthetic early on.
They have quickly progressed from slogan tees, and today the brand consists of three categories – T-shirting and denim, jewellery and the more directional seasonal fashion collections for men and women. Whether inspired by punk romanticism, peace and love, or nomads and gypsies, each Stolen Girlfriends Club collection has an underlying feeling of rock ‘n roll delinquency. The designer’s casual surf backgrounds are also reflected in the wearable, sportswear feel to the clothes.
