Mauerer is a hat shop that has been in operation since 1873, when it was established as a retail store for an existing hat factory. The shop has remained in the same location at Mariahilfer Straße 117, 1060 Vienna, ever since. Mauerer was founded at a time when hats were considered status symbols, and it was unthinkable to leave the house without one, regardless of the season.
Despite the economic hardships of the interwar period, including the Great Depression, Mauerer was able to weather the storm. The business picked up after World War II, and in the early 1950s, the salesroom was renovated in a modern style. This was followed by a period of general economic growth, during which Mauerer established itself as a leading company within the Austrian hat industry.
In 1972, the Runge family acquired Geschwister Mauerer, expanding the company's offering to include women's hats and emphasizing its existing strengths in the men's hat sector. It is worth noting that Mauerer was the first registered BORSALINO sales point in Austria, with the previous owners recognizing the potential in this supplier shortly after the war and predicting the brand's global significance.
