Hammerschmid's story begins in the picturesque town of Marquartstein, Germany, where Karl Hammerschmid founded the company "K und G Hammerschmid Textilgroßhandel" in 1951. In its earliest days, the company's collection primarily consisted of yard goods, tablecloths, and scarves adorned with typical Bavarian motifs.
By 1957, Karl's eldest son, Wolfgang Hammerschmid, had completed his education at a secondary school and a textile college and began working full time in the company. Five years later, in 1962, Heinz Hammerschmid, the second son, also joined the family business after finishing his secondary education and training as a retail merchant. That same year, the first business building and residential house were established on the current grounds of the Hammerschmid company.
The company reached a significant milestone in 1965 when it broke the million-mark threshold in revenue for the first time. As the 70s approached, Hammerschmid expanded its collection to include ready-to-wear garments such as blouses, dresses, and shirts, all designed by Heinz Hammerschmid himself.
In 1977, Hammerschmid printed its first brochure, marking another step in its growth. By the start of the 1980s, the company had evolved into a GmbH (limited liability company) with Karl and his two sons, Wolfgang and Heinz, as shareholders. Throughout the 80s, Hammerschmid refined its product range, gradually phasing out tablecloths and yard goods, and introducing a complete traditional clothing collection for both men and women.
The 90s saw more developments for Hammerschmid. In 1995, a new warehouse was built specifically for DOB shipping, and in 1998, a new building with offices and a fabric warehouse was erected. The business continued to grow in the early 2000s, with an additional 400 square meters of storage space created for DOB and HAKA in 2001.
By 2009, Hammerschmid had become one of the leading companies in the area of sporty traditional fashion in Germany and Austria. It's also worth noting that the company has remained family-owned since its inception, which is a point of pride for them.
In 2015, the company purchased a former print shop, repurposing it as an additional shipping warehouse. The following year, it was evident that Hammerschmid had stayed true to its founding principles, continuing to value handwork, tradition, and customs. They even maintained their own tailoring shop in Marquartstein.
The global pandemic of 2021 significantly impacted Hammerschmid, causing a substantial drop in sales. To prevent layoffs, the company introduced short-time work for the first time. However, Hammerschmid proved its resilience in 2022. Following the end of the pandemic, there was a strong resurgence in demand for traditional attire. In response, Hammerschmid purchased its own manufacturing plant in Hungary, marking yet another milestone in its journey.
