The story of Floyd starts in the early 1970s, in the bohemian neighborhood of Venice, Los Angeles. This area, once known for its artistic and free-spirited community, was the heart of an American cultural renaissance. From airbrush artists and car customizers to rock musicians, they all shared the affordable houses and workshops around Abbott Kinney Boulevard. At the same time, local youths were shaping their own surfboards to ride the Pacific waves. As the Southern Californian summers grew hotter, these cool, sun-burnt 'dogtown boys' took to surfing concrete basins of drainage ditches and empty swimming pools with their skateboards. The introduction of a new kind of soft polyurethane skateboard wheels by Cadillac Wheels in 1973 gave these Venice youths the right tools to take their laid-back surfing style to the streets, stirring up a worldwide skateboarding revolution.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, two Bavarian teenagers, Bernd Georgi and Horst Kern, were captivated by the cool and casual California way of life. They spent their days skateboarding the streets of their village, customizing their bicycles, and dreaming about the vibrant Venice scene. Even though they never made it to Venice during the heyday of skateboarding, they held on to their dreams of an unconventional life. They pursued careers in lifestyle fashion, which took them to South Africa and Hong Kong. In 1996, they founded their own company, producing high-quality accessories and luggage for major brands worldwide.
The journey of these two individuals led to the birth of Floyd. With more than 20 years of experience in high-end luggage production, they returned to their roots to create a brand that embodied their teenage dreams. Floyd and its unconventional travel cases on wheels are an homage to the spirit of mid-1970s Venice Bohemia, inspired by the flashy design language of skateboards, surfboards, streetwear, motorbikes, and Kustom Kulture cars that marked Los Angeles' most vibrant decade.
Floyd's mission extends beyond the production of trendy luggage. It aims to breathe life back into modern travelling, countering the monotony of conformist black business luggage often seen on baggage claims around the world. Floyd believes in the lingering sparkle of coolness within what has become a tiresome, routine aspect of travel, and seeks to ignite that spark once again, both in spirit and style.
