about
Chako was launched in 2003 by a mother & daughter team - Fusako Nakanishi and Kazumi Lomri who aspires to breath new life into beautiful traditional Japanese obi & kimono by creating modern, yet timeless & versatile pieces. Their collaboration began one summer, when Kazumi asked her crafty mother for a small favor - to make a handbag out of a silk obi that she found in an antique market in Tokyo.
After moving to Hong Kong in 2002, Kazumi was inspired to pursue the venture seriously with the encouragements of her friends, whom were already putting in their orders! The duo decided to start a business and named the brand Chako, Fusako's childhood nickname. The inspiration for their logo came from the Nakanishi family crest and they made it unique by having the two-plum flowers meet in a circle, which represents their partnership in this venture.
Since the launch of the brand, Chako clutches have been widely popular in NYC, Hong Kong and London. They have been sold in various stores, including Lane Crawford in Hong Kong (leading luxury department store), Austique in London (named top 50 boutiques in London by Time Out) and Plaza Too boutiques in New York City & Connecticut.
Chako's spirit is in every bag, and each bag is as diverse and beautiful as the woman who carries them. Each clutch is individually designed and handcrafted from genuine silk obi & kimono fabrics and has a detachable chain that enables it to be worn in 3 ways: over the shoulder, on the wrist or as a clutch. Chako bags are also designed so that they maximize every inch of useable fabric.
